However, these updates might not be in sync with every user’s requirements, maybe due to the introduction of new features or the new design layout. Apart from that, there are some features that only work with the older version of Spotify. For example, the ability to use the app via the organization’s proxy, or if you want to use the app on an older version of macOS or Windows, then using the older variant of Spotify will be your best bet. However, that might soon be a thing of the past.
Fix Spotify: This app is restricted to premium users only
From May 12, 2023, onwards. you will not be able to use any Spotify version which dates back to April 2021 or before. This change has been officially implemented by Spotify and if you are using an older build of Spotify, then it will automatically be updated to the latest version. However, if you have disabled auto-updates and then try to access Spotify, then you’ll straightaway be greeted with the “this app is restricted to premium users only” error message.
Now, we could take this discussion in two directions. First off, we could appreciate this move from Spotify as using an older version will not only deprive of new functionalities but also the latest bug fixes and security updates. So having an older version of any app is paving the way for the risks to enter.
Moreover, it isn’t that Spotify has completely disabled downgrade, you could still roll back to an older version if the current one is not working along the expected lines. It’s just that the version should be released on May 2021 or later. On the other hand, there have been a few users who have completely opposed this move.
As mentioned before, the older versions of Spotify [released before April 2021] are the only ones that you could run on older macOS and Windows. So those set of users wanted a more flexible approach instead of being completely kicked out of this service. But now that the line has been drawn, you have no choice but to jump to the other side of the fence or continue to get bugged by the “this app is restricted to premium users only” error in Spotify.
